LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT LWVCO

Karen Sheek LWVCO | Published on 12/1/2020
Greetings LWVCO Members, Election 2020 saw an un-precedented voter turn-out; a staggering record never seen before in the history of the United States. As of November 5th, The Colorado Sun reported that 3,295,192 Coloradans had cast their ballots, accounting for 78.7% of total registered voters statewide. Colorado was second only to Minnesota in state voter turn-out recording a whopping 82% of their registered voters casting ballots. “This is an historic election,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold. “Even during a pandemic, more Coloradans voted in this election than in any previous election in our state’s history. Colorado’s elections set the gold standard for the nation. It is clear that when people have access, they will vote.”

This year also saw a higher than usual level of participation among young voters. According to the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) at Tufts University, voter participation among eligible 18-29-year-olds was 52%-55% higher than the 42%-44% recorded in the 2016 elections. These percentages could be as high as 56% once all votes are counted and data is certified.

There was a focus on young voters during this election cycle; PSA’s targeted them; voter registration on college campuses was ramped up, and in some states, including Colorado, additional ballot boxes were placed on college campuses making it easier for college students to vote. Colorado Leagues worked tirelessly with university officials to educate young voters on the importance of voting and to provide information on ballot issues. The La Plata County League partnered with the Ft. Lewis Political Science Department, coaching students who researched and created short videos on 2020 ballot issues. The League then promoted them online. Research has found that those who have voted in past elections are more likely to vote again. Educating and encouraging young people to engage in the political process lays the foundation for creating life-long voters.

LWVCO experienced an intensive array of activities leading up to and directly following the Elections. Not only did the League maintain its non-partisan education and voter information services, but we reached more than 9 million voters in Colorado. To all current and past members, Vote411 staff, poll works, countless numbers of Coloradans and campaign managers across the nation, we pat you on your backs for a job well done!

And while we should celebrate our accomplishments, and there were many, our work is not done. The principals of Democracy, human rights at the very core of our Constitution, are being compromised. We ask that you continue to voice your political priorities. Whatever your opinions, values and motivations please stay engaged in the political process. By voicing your positions, you touch the very core of the democratic process.

This Thanksgiving, I hope that each of you will focus on all the good things we have to appreciate. Have a wonderful and safe holiday. Karen
