April Briefing
An Update on Denver’s Basic Income Project – Signs of Success

Tuesday, April 16, 5:30 p.m.

Zoom Link

The Denver Basic Income Project is a unique social welfare program designed to be a model by which our city can make a positive impact on people living in poverty by providing unconditional cash payments to our unhoused neighbors. In collaboration with researchers at the University of Denver, a randomized control trial was set up in 2023 to measure the effectiveness of the project.  In April of last year, the LWVD invited Mark Donovan, the founder and director of the Denver Basic Income Project to present a briefing about this innovative program. His enthusiastic presentation led us to ask if he would return when adequate data had been collected to provide us with an update. We are pleased to bring back Mr. Donovan and Maria Sierra, DBIP’s Community Engagement Manager, to describe the promising results of the program.

Making Democracy Work

The League of Women Voters of Denver, a nonpartisan, grassroots organization, has fought since the 1930s to improve our systems of government and impact public policies through education and advocacy.

The League is strictly nonpartisan. We neither support nor oppose candidates for office. At the same time, the League is wholeheartedly political and works to influence policy through advocacy. The League:
  • Acts as a force to create positive, lasting change in our community
  • Empowers voters to protect their right to vote
  • Educates citizens and fosters dialogue on pertinent issues - from health care and climate change to openness in government
  • Strives to ensure that all votes are counted and all voices are heard
  • Works to preserve our constitutional rights
  • Partners with others to make democracy work
We believe that sensible, responsible civil discourse and action based on substance rather than partisanship are essential for civic improvement. Our enduring vitality and resonance come from our membership, which is open to all people 16 years of age and older.
