November 16 Program Briefing: Colorado State Demographer

Tuesday, November 16, 2021 5:30-7:00 PM

Our next briefing will feature Colorado's state Demographer, Elizabeth Garner (see  State Demographer).  She last joined LWVD as a briefing speaker in February, 2019. Her presentation was well received - who knew that data and statistics and graphs could be really interesting and (dare I say) entertaining? She is returning following the challenging 2020 Census and compilation of a new decade's information.  Here are some of the questions we asked her to address:
    • What has changed over the time since you presented in 2019?
    • What trends are continuing or new?
    • Do you think the 2020 Census accurately counted citizens of color?  Some people express fears about changing demographics based on race, age and other differences.
    • What do you think we can learn from census information to address those fears?
    • Housing and jobs are significant concerns in Colorado. What can the results of the Census offer us to address those concerns? And of course, there is the issue of redistricting here and nationally. Please comment.

If you have other issues or questions you would like Ms. Garner to address, send them to Susan Stark susanstark1947@gmail.com and I will ask her to include them in her presentation.

  • Voter Service Wrap-up

Voter service has done a review and critique of their accomplishments for the November election and they're preparing for the next one!   The Voter Service Committee will be looking for help with speaker's bureau, pros and cons writeups, distribution of pamphlets, and other activities.

A review of a variety of the many voter guides published for the November election showed that our Pros and Cons booklet was the most unbiased.

Please contact Jeanette Scotland or Anne Duncan now if you'd like to participate in working on the next election.

Jeanette Scotland and Anne Duncan, Voter Service co-chairs.
    Club Express Bootcamp
Many of you might be interested in more exposure to the capabilities of our member management system.  ClubExpress is holding a Bootcamp which any member of the Denver League may attend.  There are sessions of interest to Presidents, Treasurers, Membership chairs, and others.  You can see details of the Bootcamp agenda HERE.

    Development Committee Notes
    • A generous donation was received from the estate of one of our long-time members.  If you would like to include the League in your estate planning, please see the Attached Document and/or consult with your financial advisor.
    • A grant of $500 was received from LWV Colorado and was used to pay for Spanish translation of our ballot issues pamphlet.  Thanks to Gordon Butz for applying for the grant and to Fran Coleman for facilitating the translation work.

    Bulb Sale Wrap-up
This year's sale is largely over and was a financial success, meeting our budget goal.  We do have leftover bulbs to deal with.

We don't know the exact numbers of bulbs available because we're waiting for the city to find volunteers to plant them for the Parks department. Leftovers are available for sale at a discount.  We also have several dozen leftover tulips and daffodils.  We also have 6 amaryllis and one dozen paper whites.
We will provide bulbs free of charge to any non-profit organization who is willing to plant them to beautify Denver.  Please let  Marty Sloven  know if you have an organization who can use them.
