Bulb Advice from
Peter Esseveld, Our Long-time Bulb Supplier

Can I store and then give the bulb itself as a holiday gift?
The southern hemisphere bulbs want to grow, planted or not, so they literally will try to grow out of the bag!  So best to plant the bulb and give the blooming plant at the holidays. The bulbs are the three described as Holiday Forcing - Amadeus, Denver, Minerva. The Dutch grown amaryllis can be held back from planting until Christmas and given as a bulb.  To save them, store in a cool, but frost-free area.  To mail a bulb as a gift, be sure to check the weather forecast at the location of shipping, its destination and general region.  Freezing temperatures of 20F and lower in the forecast should be avoided.  Light frost for a short period is fine for shipping.

Can I plant my amaryllis outside?
Yes, amaryllis can be planted outside in the summer, in a warm and sunny location.  Feeding amaryllis blood meal fertilizer is highly recommended after planting outside, water from time to time to keep soil moist.  Here's the important thing: bulbs must be dug up, before frost!  After harvesting, bulbs must be cleaned of dirt, leaving roots and foliage in tact!  Foliage must be left on until completely died off, then removed. Let the bulbs rest for about 6 weeks, then replant in a pot and store indoors.  Amaryllis will bloom again.
