Weekly Update

Celebrate International Women's Day with LWVCO and Zonta
4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 8

The League of Women Voters of Denver is partnering with LWVCO and Zonta Club of Denver for a party to celebrate International Women's Day. It starts with a Happy Hour of wine and conversation in the spacious lounge of the LWVCO office at 110 16th St., Suite 1326. At 5:30 p.m., we will walk the few blocks to the City and County Building to watch it light up in purple.

Come enjoy a free, fun, stress-free event to celebrate a day honoring women and gender equity. BYOB if you can. No reservations required. If you have questions, contact Jeanette Scotland at jscotland@gmail.com. To enter the party you will need to call Jeanette at 518-229-4387 or Beth Hendrix at 303-588-5470 to be admitted. We hope you can make it and relax a bit in this stressful time.

What Can We Do??

Pressure continues to come from the federal government for state and local officials to support ICE in our cities and Denver was in the spotlight yesterday as Mayor Johnston was questioned by the House oversight committee. If you are looking for ways to support our immigrant and refugee neighbors, here are some actions you can take.
  • Join the Colorado Rapid Response Network by becoming an Observer and reporting what you witness. If you are witnessing ICE Activity:
    • Call 1-844-864-8341 and dial 1 to speak with a volunteer dispatcher 24/7.
    • The dispatcher will ask you for your location and the situation details. They will then send trained volunteers to the scene.
    • If it is an ICE raid, legal observer volunteers will record the event, identify agents on the scene, and inform people involved of their constitutional rights.
    • After the incident, volunteers will follow up to connect people affected with a local member of CIRC’s (Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition) statewide DocuTeam.
    • They will work to further document the event, refer legal resources if necessary, and create a plan of action.
  • Attend a Know Your Rights training (both for yourself and to be in the know about the rights of our immigrant neighbors)
  • Volunteer with or donate to organizations working to provide support to immigrants and refugees.
  • As always, call your local, state, and national officials!

LWVCO Advocates for Transparency in Government

From a CPR article entitled, "Transparency Advocates Frustrated Over Limited Access to Government Records Consider Ballot Measure"

"Beth Hendrix, the executive director of the League of Women Voters of Colorado, said her group was “distressed” when lawmakers passed their open meeting exemptions.“We are concerned that some legislators are prioritizing efficiency over transparency, and the voters should always be first,” she said. “These people are our employees, ‘our’ being the voters.”
