Suffs at Denver’s North High School!

Suffs, a Tony Award winning musical about the women’s suffrage movement, is coming to Denver.  North High School is one of only ten high schools nationwide to receive free performance licenses. North High students have asked League of Women Voters to help drive community engagement during this spring’s production. And, what a fun way to encourage voting and support young artists!

Here is how to get involved:
  • Attend a community fundraiser for Suffs entitled "Votes Through the Decades."  It will be held on Saturday February 21, from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Diamond Hill Elks Lodge.  The lodge is located at 2475 West 26th Avenue, Denver, 80211. There will be a silent auction and tickets for the event cost $25.  For tickets, see https://givebutter.com/c/zRn8WN.
  • Staff the LWV table at the community fundraiser from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on February 21.  We can talk up the suffrage movement and share information about LWV.  LWV Circulators will also be in attendance to register voters or help people check or update their information.
  • Attend one of the Suffs Performances!  North High School is located at 2960 Speer Blvd and tickets are available at the door.  Performances include:
    • Thursday March 19,  7:00 p.m.
    • Friday March 20,  7:00 p.m.
    • Saturday March 21, noon
    • Saturday March 21, 7:00 p.m.
  • Staff the LWV table at performances for one hour before showtime and during intermission too, if possible.  And you can attend the show at no cost.  We can talk up suffrage, share information about LWV, and encourage people to vote this year.   Circulators will also be in attendance to register voters or help people check or update their information.

If you’re available to help staff the LWV table at the fundraiser or one of the Suffs performances, please let Lisa Haddox know at lisa.m.haddox@gmail.com.

League Advocacy - Letter to City Council in Support of Proposed Law Enforcement Mask Ban

Editor's Note:  The bill advanced out of committee yesterday, February 11, and will be voted on by the full council soon.

RE: Denver Bill 26-0125

Dear Committee Members,

The Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Denver (LWVD) writes in support of proposed Bill 26-0125 to ensure transparency in the identification of law enforcement personnel during interrogation, detention, or arrest of an individual within Denver. This bill concurs with Denver League’s government-related policy position to support a “governmental system that is open…. accountable, fair in its treatment of all citizens, and in which responsibilities are clearly defined and assigned.”

This bill’s prohibition for law enforcement personnel operating within Denver to wear opaque facial covering when performing their duties addresses public safety fears that can result from the lack of identity between officers and members of the public. We encourage your committee to vote in favor of Bill 26-0125.

Thank you for your service and for considering our request.

Sincerely,
Susan Stark and Sarah O. McCarthy
Co-Directors of Program and Advocacy
