Urge Your Representatives to Oppose SAVE and MEGA
Two Extraordinary Attacks on Voting Rights
How the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility America (SAVE) Act would suppress voting in the November 2026 midterm elections:
- Requires documentary proof of citizenship as well as photo ID to register to vote.
- To vote, registered voters would have to bring an original birth certificate or passport to the polls, both of which incur expense to the person requesting the document.
- The REAL ID used in most states, including Colorado, would not be sufficient.
- 50% of Americans have no passport.
- Millions do not have ready access to their original birth certificates.
- Married women who took their husband’s last name, rural voters, poor voters, and minority communities would be part of the estimated 21 million citizens who could be disenfranchised (Source: Brennan Center for Justice).
- State election officials would be required to aggressively “scrub” voter rolls, a process which has in the past cancelled many legitimate eligible voters.
The other bill introduced in Congress, the MEGA Act (Make Elections Great Again), erodes state control over elections in addition to requiring proof of citizenship to vote. The US Constitution explicitly states that the “time, place and manner” of elections resides with the states.
The MEGA Act includes, but goes beyond the requirements of proof of citizenship and voter ID. It would also:
- End universal vote-by-mail for federal elections by altering rules now set by states (like Colorado) in order to make it difficult to apply for a mail-in ballot.
- Severely limit people from assisting voters who cannot take their ballots to a collection box (elderly, disabled).
- Restrict federal agencies from partnering with outside organizations (like LWV trained volunteers) to conduct voter registration or mobilization activities.
Both these proposed bills suggest that there is significant voter fraud, which is not factual.
Our Colorado-administered elections are already considered safe and secure, with only tiny numbers of non-citizens attempting to vote. (See the LWVCO white paper “Colorado Gold Standard Elections” and the Cato Institute report of February 5, 2026) The requirements of the SAVE Act and the MEGA Act would likely discourage eligible voters from participating because of the time-consuming and difficult process of obtaining acceptable documents.
Take Action: Contact your representatives to let them know you are opposed to the SAVE Act and the MEGA Act. Urge friends outside Colorado to do the same!
