Meet Denver’s own S/Hero - A National Professional on Election Security and Safety

In case you didn’t know it, nationally acclaimed Amber McReynolds began her career in Denver. She was responsible for innovating our current mail in ballot for our Denver elections in 2010.   As Deputy Director of the Denver Elections Division, she took a year to coordinate with three vendors: a software developer company that partnered with the city, a printing company that designed and printed a new envelope with a special barcode, and the USPS whose processing system had to be understood (!) and embedded in the software’s design. The project was tested twice in 2009 then implemented fully in 2010.

Ms. McReynolds also introduced Ballot Trace, whereby a registered voter signed up to get an email when the ballot was counted. That year, calls to the Elections Division decreased by 90% from people asking, “What’s the status of my ballot?” A few years later the system expanded to be used statewide as BallotTrax.  Research has shown that it increased voting possibly due to an increased trust in the voting process.

Ms. McReynolds is currently the Chair of the Board of Governors of the United States Postal Service in addition to serving locally as Chair of Courageous Colorado.

Our Annual Meeting is your chance to hear her speak about her passion: making voting easy, safe, and secure.  Register now for an informative presentation and a chance to meet other League members.

Denver League Advocacy - Data Centers

Leaguers Alice Kelly and Toni Larson brought to the Board's attention a bill up for discussion at City Council on Monday, May 18 on a moratorium on data center construction.  The Board sent the following letter that morning to the city council members encouraging this moratorium based on our League positions.  The final vote on the bill that night was 13-0 in favor.  The LWVDenver Observer Corp will be following this topic closely in the coming months.

Dear Council Members,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters of Denver (LWVD), we are writing in support of proposed Bill 26-0431 that would authorize a moratorium on data centers in Denver. It is proposed that this moratorium would provide the City time to devise thorough planning and zoning regulations for existing and future data centers to protect the health, safety, and general welfare of Denver residents.

Denver League is advocating for the support of this proposed bill based on the member-approved policy position to support measures that “ensure sound planning for Denver” and that offer “increased citizen participation in the decision-making process.”

We encourage a “yes” vote on this bill. Thank you for your service and for considering our request.

Sincerely,
Susan Stark and Sarah McCarthy
Co-Directors of Program and Advocacy
