Primary Election Edition!

Do You Have Your Ballot?

Ballots "dropped" in the mail on Monday, June 8.  If you have BallotTrax, you already know this! If you have not received your ballot or have any questions about the 2026 State Primary Election call the Denver Elections Division at (720) 913-VOTE (8683).

Primaries matter!

Primaries are where voters help decide which candidates will appear on the general election ballot. By the time November arrives, many of the key choices have already been made in the primaries.
  • Colorado has open primaries. Unaffiliated voters, who make up a large share of Colorado's electorate, can vote in either the Democratic or Republican primary (but not both), giving them a significant voice in candidate selection.
  • Your vote has more influence. Primary elections usually have lower turnout than general elections, so each vote carries more weight.
  • Important local offices are often decided. Many positions that directly affect your community—such as county commissioners, school board members, sheriffs, judges, and state legislators—may be effectively decided in the primary.
  • You shape the issues candidates focus on. Candidates pay close attention to primary voters and often adjust their priorities based on what those voters care about.
  • You strengthen representative democracy. Voting in primaries helps ensure that candidates reflect the views and needs of a broader group of citizens, not just a small number of highly engaged voters.
  • You have a voice early in the process. Primaries are your chance to influence the direction of government before the final choices are set for the general election.

In short, primary elections are where voters help narrow the field of candidates and influence the future direction of their communities, states, and country. Participating in primaries is one of the most effective ways to make your voice heard in the democratic process.
